Some Georgian wines are built around power. Others reveal themselves through balance. Tavkveri 2023 by Wine Horizon belongs firmly to the second tradition, bringing together bright red fruit, gentle tannins and the distinctive character of one of Georgia’s indigenous grape varieties.
Produced by the small Wine Horizon winery in the village of Kavtoskhevi, around 40 km from Tbilisi, this dry red is made from 100% Tavkveri, an old Georgian variety particularly associated with the Kartli wine region.
Wine Horizon is a young winery with a longer story behind it. Its founder’s connection with Georgian wine began in 2019 through the export of Georgian wines to France. After four years working with Georgian wine on international markets, he established Wine Horizon in 2022 and began producing his own wines.
Production remains deliberately small, currently around 5,500 bottles per year across the winery’s range.
For this Tavkveri, Georgian tradition provides the foundation. The wine is made using the qvevri method, with fermentation taking place in the traditional clay vessels that have shaped Georgian winemaking for thousands of years. Once vinification is complete, the wine is transferred to stainless-steel tanks, preserving its freshness and fruit character without introducing oak influence.
The result is a medium-bodied Georgian red wine that favours freshness and balance over weight. Red berries and cherry lead the aromatic profile, while soft tannins and lively acidity give the wine structure without making it heavy.
This is Tavkveri showing a different face of Georgian red wine: expressive, approachable and unmistakably rooted in local tradition.

Tavkveri’s combination of fresh acidity, moderate body and gentle tannins makes it particularly versatile at the table. Try it with:
- Grilled or roasted pork
- Roast chicken or duck
- Georgian meat dishes and grilled meats
- Mushroom dishes and roasted vegetables
- Tomato-based pasta
- Semi-hard and mature cheeses
- Charcuterie and lightly smoked meats

For wine lovers who associate Georgian reds primarily with the intensity of Saperavi, Wine Horizon Tavkveri 2023 offers an interesting counterpoint. It retains the character of traditional qvevri winemaking while expressing itself through freshness, red fruit and softer structure.
It is also the story of a new generation of Georgian wine producers: internationally experienced, small in scale, and returning to indigenous grapes and ancient methods to create wines for today’s European table.
