From the Roots of Winemaking to Unique Amber Wine
Georgia is home to 525 indigenous grape varieties out of the 2,500 known globally.
The earliest evidence of winemaking was discovered here, with traces of wine found on clay vessels, indicating that wine was first produced around 8,000 years ago.
Traditionally, wine in Georgia is made in qvevri — large clay vessels buried in the ground. Qvevri provides an ideal natural temperature for fermenting grapes, and this method is increasingly adopted by winemakers worldwide. The qvevri has been recognized as a UNESCO cultural heritage.
Georgia has also made its mark in wine classification by introducing a new wine color — amber (sometimes referred to as orange or, less frequently, copper). Amber wines are made from white grape varieties and gain their distinctive color (a deeper, rich golden hue) from prolonged contact between the grape skins and the fermenting juice. In other words, amber wine is white grape wine produced using red wine techniques.
Furthermore, the word “wine” in various languages (wine in English, vino in Italian) has its roots in Georgia’s original term, ღვინო (ghvino).
